Information for International Students

As your I-20s are issued, please remember to visit the online application website to access the enrollment link to indicate your intention to attend NCSU.  Once you’ve done this, please contact me for access to your PIN number to aid in registration. 

Arrival Guide

The Arrival Survival Guide can be found at http://www.ncsu.edu/grad/current-students/arrival-survival.html.  I encourage you to review the Guide and take care of as many tasks as possible prior to your arrival.  The Survival Guide also contains helpful information regarding area housing options.

Important Dates

  • The first day of classes for the fall semester is Wednesday, August 19 .  

    All Incoming Graduate Students:
    • Orientation for the economics graduate program will be held Monday, August 17, noon,  in Nelson Hall, room 4210.               

    • New Graduate Student Orientation,  Tuesday, August 18,  9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon,  McKimmon Center.  This orientation session is co-sponsored by the NCSU Graduate School and the NCSU Graduate Student Association.  The orientation session is highly recommended for all new students. 

    • Fun in the Sun!  On Friday, August 21 we’ll gather at Pullen Park to eat, play games, hang out, meet each other and get ready for the new academic year!  Pullen Park is adjacent to NCSU’s campus at 520 Ashe Avenue and is often utilized by NCSU faculty and students.  Bring friends and family.  There’ll be plenty for the kids to do including a train ride, carousel rides and paddle boats.  Plan to arrive around 5:00!   Please note that train, carousel and kiddie boat rides are $1. 

    Teaching Assistants:

    • Economics Graduate TA Summer Workshop will be held Wednesday, August 12 – Friday, August 14.  Teaching assistants will receive additional information regarding the training session in early August.  This session is required for all new economics graduate TAs.

    •  New Teaching Assistant Orientation, sponsored by the NCSU Graduate School, will be held Tuesday, August 18, from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the McKimmon Center.  Attendance is required for all new graduate TAs.

    International Students:

    • For international students, your attendance is recommended at an information fair, Thursday, August 13, 1-4pm in Talley Student Center.  The information fair is sponsored by the Office of International Services.  For more information, visit:  http://www.ncsu.edu/project/oiswebdev/newsite/ois/orientation/oevents.php

    • For international students there is a required campus-wide orientation session on Friday, August 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This event will be held in the Talley Student Center Ballroom and is also sponsored by the Office of International Services.  For more information, visit:  http://www.ncsu.edu/project/oiswebdev/newsite/ois/orientation/oevents.php

    • Also required for international students who are appointed as Teaching Assistants is the SPEAK test.  It is given in room 216 of the Language and Technology Center, Laundry Building, 2341 Stinson Drive.  All new international TAs have been registered to complete the SPEAK Test on Monday, August 17 at 9am.  You will need to bring your All Campus Card for admission to the test.  Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled test time. 

Access

MyPack Portal

The MyPack Portal is the University’s one-stop access point for information.  It allows access to academic and financial information as well as other student resources.  Please familiarize yourself with MyPack as you’ll use this avenue to register for courses, develop your Plan of Work (planned coursework), schedule oral exams and apply to graduate (yay!).

All-Campus Card
Upon arrival on campus, you should visit West Dunn Building at the corner of Dan Allen Drive and Thurman Drive to acquire your All-Campus Card.  It is used to identify you as a member of the NC State community, and is used to access services around the campus, including meal plans, AllCampus Account purchases, gym access, and the library. Keep this card with you at all times when on campus.

Unity ID and Password

Unity is a campus-wide computing system that is used by NC State University employees and students for a number of services including emailing and access to various information systems including the MyPack Portal.  All new students are automatically issued a Unity ID and password.

Unity ID:  first initial of first name, first initial of middle name, first 6 letters of last name.

Unity Password:  last 4 digits of student ID number (the 000 number), followed by the two digit month and day of birth.

Upon initial login, you will be asked to change your password. If these methods don’t work, please contact the Help Desk at 515-HELP or visit

Housing & Parking Options

First Semester Registration

To register for courses through NCSU’s MyPack Portalyou will need your Unity ID and password.  Once you’ve indicated your intention to attend NCSU via the enrollment link on your application, I will release you to register.  In most cases, first year curriculum is standard.  We are working on our end to get everyone pre-registered.  Hence, you may access your records and find that your fall schedule is already in place!  The standard fall curriculum is indicated below for the various degrees.  As always, please free to  contact me to discuss concerns or questions about your course selection.  We can chat via email, or we can schedule a time to meet when you arrive on campus.  New students have until September 1 to register.
