The Business Management Department was restructured in 2006, with about 30 faculty members moving to the college’s new Department of Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Our reorganized business management department now includes over 45 faculty members working in the areas of:

  • Finance, with Charles Jones, Edwin Gill Professor of Finance, as area coordinator
  • Information systems/information technology, with Fay Cobb Payton, associate professor, as area coordinator
  • Marketing, with Mitzi Montoya, Zelnak Professor of Marketing Innovation as area coordinator
  • Operations and supply chain management, with Robert Handfield, Bank of America University Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management, as area coordinator.

Two new tenure-track faculty members joined the department this year:

  • Jonathan Bohlmann, associate professor, whose focus areas include product innovation, new product development, product strategy, marketing strategy, first-mover advantage and group decision making.
  • Michael Stanko, assistant professor, who focuses on new product development, business-to-business marketing, and outsourcing/offshoring.

In addition, Dennis Eagan (finance), Myron Feinstein (supply chain management) and James Yuille (IS/IT) are assisting the department as adjuncts and lecturers.

The department also is home to the following:

Service and Product Innovation Management (SPI)

SPI oversees the college’s educational and research activities in the area of service and product innovation, including course development and practicum projects for the service and consulting and innovation management concentrations in the college’s NC State Jenkins MBA program. It also works with the college’s Executive Education office to develop and deliver programs for business and industry.

Supply Chain Resource Cooperative (SCRC)

The SCRC supports the college’s undergraduate and NC State Jenkins MBA concentrations in supply chain management through curriculum development and by providing students real world experience through practicum projects and other interaction involving SCRC companies. Supply chain faculty also work with the college’s Executive Programs office to develop and deliver programs for business and industry. The SCRC hosts two meetings each year, at the end of the spring and fall semesters, at which student teams present on their practicum projects to the SCRC partner companies. Industry leaders also present and lead discussions on current topics in supply chain management.

Collectively, our faculty focuses on research and teaching in areas that are core to all business operations. This fall, with the global economic crisis, finance faculty members in particular have been responding to calls from reporters working on financial management stories, and our supply chain faculty focused discussions in SCRC’s semi-annual meeting on surviving in the current economic climate.

In the classroom, our faculty teach, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the basic principles of managing in a high-tech environment using management tools that are often high-tech, though some management principles transcend technology.

Pedagogy has received a high-tech augmentation from Mitzi Montoya, Zelnack Professor of Marketing Innovation, and Claudia Kimbrough, marketing instructor, who have been working collaboratively with colleagues in the college, including Lynda Aiman-Smith, associate professor in the MIE department, and at other institutions to incorporate the virtual world of Second Life into their curricula. You can check out the College of Management’s virtual environment if you have access to Second Life, at this SL url.
