Faculty in the college’s newest department - Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MIE) – focus their research and teaching in the areas of strategic management; innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology commercialization; organizational leadership; management of technology; business law; new product development processes; ethics; and work group processes.

Formed in 2007 from the Department of Business Management, the MIE faculty members comprise a critical mass of knowledge and expertise in their closely related fields. Establishing this new department was a logical progression of the college’s founding mission, which is to focus on the management of technology across all business disciplines.

The MIE faculty members teach in the college’s bachelor of science in business administration program’s entrepreneurship major and minor, and the college’s NC State Jenkins MBA program, particularly in the program’s niche concentrations: biosciences management; entrepreneurship and technology commercialization; innovation management; and services management and consulting.

Highly interdisciplinary, the MIE faculty also work on research projects with faculty in the college’s other departments, centers and initiatives, and colleagues across campus, throughout the Research Triangle Park, and beyond. The MIE department is home base for three of the college’s centers and initiatives:

BioSciences Management

This highly interdisciplinary program works with faculty in various disciplines in the College of Management and across the NC State campus to support development of courses and practicum experiences for the MBA concentration in biosciences management and its related joint MBA/Master of Microbial Biology and joint MBA/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree programs. BioSci Management also hosts the annual BioSciences Forum. The BioSciences Management program is led by Richard Kouri, director and professor of practice, with input from its BioSciences Industry Advisory Board.

Center for Innovation Management Studies (CIMS)

For 25 years, CIMS has been producing industry-driven, research-based innovation management solutions, making this knowledge available to industries through its partnership with the Industry Research Institute and other organizations and institutions, its academic and research fellows. With the launch of its new interactive website this fall, the CIMS knowledge storehouse, including innovation assessment and other tools, is now more accessible to those in business, industry or research. CIMS is led by Al Bean, executive director, and Paul Mugge, director.

Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization (TEC)

For over a decade, the TEC (previously called HiTEC) has been teaching NC State graduate students how to identify and advance new technologies with potential for commercialization, using its unique TEC Algorithm. This year, the TEC faculty team and partner institutions in several other countries formed TECnet, TECnet, an international technology commercialization education network, with funding from the EU-U.S. Atlantis program.

The MIE department currently has 34 faculty members, including David Townsend, assistant professor, who joined this year.
