“When I teach these topics, I can give first hand examples of what it is like to negotiate the acquisition of another company, put in place and execute a plan to integrate the operations of two Fortune 500 companies, or put together and market an equity offering. “
Bonnie Hancock Executive Director of Enterprise Risk Management Initiative, Accounting Lecturer
In many of my roles at Progress Energy, I was challenged with explaining difficult financial topics to groups of employees.
I found that I really enjoyed this “teaching” aspect of my position, and had developed a skill for boiling down complex topics so that they could be understood by broad groups of employees. I decided to come to NC State so that I could spend more of my time doing something that I thoroughly enjoyed while giving students an education that focused on practical applications.
One of the courses I teach is “Applied Financial Management” in the Masters of Accounting program. This course covers topics like valuation, credit analysis, and mergers and acquisitions.
When I teach these topics, I can give first hand examples of what it is like to negotiate the acquisition of another company, put in place and execute a plan to integrate the operations of two Fortune 500 companies, or put together and market an equity offering. Now, in the classroom, when we are reviewing the basics of a particular topic, students frequently ask: ‘What really happens when… .’ I can make these topics come alive by telling them what really happens.
Students don’t just learn a particular topic’ rather, they get a sense of how the knowledge is used in a business setting. I believe this gives our students a high level of business savvy
