The History of the NC State MBA Program

The history of economics, business, and management education at North Carolina State University goes back to the early 1900s. Following a Depression-era hiatus that continued until the early 1970s, the university again offered undergraduate degrees in business management and accounting through the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 1976, the Master of Science in Management degree was added.

In 1990, a team of academic visionaries recommended that the university establish a College of Management, with a unique focus that draws on the strengths of NC State. The recommendation was accepted and in 1992,

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors authorized the establishment of a College of Management at NC State with the following guidelines. The new college:

  • Would provide a curriculum that integrates the functional areas of business with a core focus on the management of technology.
  • Would develop a broad integrated curriculum in business management.
  • Where feasible, would develop relationships with the other colleges, especially the colleges of Engineering, Textiles, and Natural Resources.

In 2002, the College of Management launched its MBA Program. In September 2007, the NC State Board of Trustees named the Jenkins Graduate School of Management in the NC State College of Management in honor of Benjamin (Ben) P. Jenkins III, vice chairman and president of the General Bank at Wachovia Corporation. The new Jenkins Graduate School is comprised of the Master of Accounting (MAC) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs, as well as the Graduate Economics Program, which is offered jointly by the College of Management and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In 2008, the Master of Global Innovation Management was established in the Jenkins Graduate School.
