New Student Information: Full-Time 2010

Important New Student Information

We are pleased that you will be joining the NC State MBA program this fall. The following information will be helpful as you start the program. Please note that attendance at orientation is expected of everyone and is critical for a smooth transition back to school.

New Student Online Chat

New full-time admitted students are invited to join MBA admissions staff and fellow incoming students for an online chat. You may take this opportunity to ask questions about orientation and registration, as well as connect with other new students. The ew student online chat will be held during summer 2010. The exact date will be announced shortly. The MBA Office will send you a reminder email a few days before the event, which will include the link and access code.

Registration and Tuition

Fall 2010 classes officially begin on Wednesday, August 18, 2010. See the complete University Calendar for further details.

Because all students take the same series of core courses, the MBA Program Office will register all incoming students for classes your first semester. You will receive an email from the MBA Office listing your unity/user ID once we register you for Fall 2010. For updated information on course times and professors, please visit the university’s MyPack Portal online course schedule. The full-time student fall courses will be posted soon.

All students taking classes on the NC State campus will receive tuition bills via email. The Cashier’s Office will be sending electronic bills during the summer. The date you receive your E-bill will depend on when you were officially admitted by the Graduate School. Payment after the deadline results in course schedule cancellation. Please be sure to add e_bill@ncsu.edu to your list of trusted senders.

For additional information regarding tuition and e-bills, please see: Electronic Billing. You may pay your tuition bill online by credit card (ePay). The University accepts Master Card or Amercian Express. However, Visa or Discover are not an acceptable method of payment. For more information, please see: Payment Options.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the MBA Program Office by e-mail or phone at 919.515.5584.

Expenses and Budgeting

In addition to expenses such as tuition, fees, and books, the MBA Program recommends that students consider setting aside money from loans and other sources for travel to job/career fairs. There are a several national career fairs each year that provide an excellent opportunity for students to interview for potential internships and full-time positions. We highly encourage students to attend at least one conference a year. The registration and travel fees vary with each conference, so please visit their website to obtain more information about the cost of attendance.

Some examples of national career fairs include:

We will post the 2010 career fair schedule during the summer months. All career fairs are open to all students, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. You will hear more about these opportunities through the Career Resources Center once you begin classes in Fall 2010.

Students beginning the program in Fall 2009 or later will pay a one-time $50 fee to the MBA Student Association (MBASA). The fee will be used for professional and social student events and activities within the MBA student clubs.

Estimated annual expenses for graduate students can be found here. Please note that tuition charges for MBA students are higher than that shown on the general University estimate. MBA tuition rates can be found here.

Orientation

ORIENTATION IS MANDATORY

Orientation for full-time students will be held before the fall 2010 semester begins. The exact dates will be announced shortly, as well as the agenda.

All elements of orientation are mandatory, so please be sure to take care of any personal business before or after orientation. We recommend that out-of-state and international students arrive in the Raleigh area several days before orientation so that issues of housing and transportation can be resolved prior to the start of orientation. Business casual attire is recommended. You will receive an MBA book bag at orientation, so you will not need to bring one.

Student ID Card: All new students should have their student ID photo made before starting classes. Please make sure to allot time for this either before or after orientation, as all elements of orientation are mandatory. The AllCampus Card office is located in the West Dunn Building, which is located on the corner of Dan Allen Drive and Thurman Drive. The AllCampus Card office may be reached at 919.515.3090.

Immunization Record and Report of Medical History:
Please complete the Report of Medical History and Immunizations form as soon as possible and return it, along with the required supporting documents, to the NC State Student Health Services. Failure to submit the form prior to the first day of class will result in registration cancellation. If you were enrolled in another degree program at NC State within the last year, you may simply update your existing “Immunization Record” and “Report of Medical History,” on file with the Student Health Services, during the first semester of your new graduate program.

Required Preparatory Courses

All students must complete a basic calculus course prior to beginning MBA coursework; however, you do not need to complete this course prior to submitting your application.

Please note that some full-time students will be required to get additional language and accent training after beginning the program. This training is provided by NC State University and is intended to improve communication skills and increase employability.

Required Tests for Orientation

Students should complete the tests by June 28, 2010. The results of these tests will be used to assist the MBA Staff in developing effective teams that will be used throughout your classes.

Test #1: Short Form for the IPIP-NEO

After completing this 120 question survey, you will receive an overall score in each of the five areas (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience). Be sure to save or write down your numerical score from each of the five areas, as you will not be able to access your score report after closing the page.

Test #2: Humanmetrics Jung Typology Test (Similar to MBTI)

After completing this survey, write down your four-letter type.

Once you have completed the IPIP-NEO and the Jung Typology test, please Report your results.

Parking Permits

If you plan to park your car on campus on a regular basis between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., it is strongly recommended that you purchase a parking pass. Parking after 5:00pm is free. Parking permits are required whenever you park on campus. An open sale will begin July 1 and continue until all permits are sold. Permit eligibility is determined by credit hours or graduate status. Graduate status precedes credit hours in the process. To apply for your parking permit, please visit the transportation website. You will need your Unity ID (User ID) and password, which you can get from Carol Smith, MBA Student Services Assistant. You should apply on July 1 or as soon as possible after, as parking permits sell out quickly.

  • University Transportation Services – Student parking permit fees and information
  • The Dan Allen Parking Deck is the closest parking area to the College of Management and requires a type “DD” pass. It is located on Dan Allen Drive just south of the Hillsborough Street-Dan Allen Drive intersection near Nelson Hall.

Laptop Requirement

The College of Management’s MBA program requires all students admitted to the program to own or have access to a laptop computer. For more information about minimum specifications and details on purchasing a laptop, please see:

NC State Computer Recommendations

Textbooks

Textbook orders are placed by each professor through the NC State Bookstore. Students should check with the bookstore for the list of required books for each class. If the NC State Bookstore does not have the book order, your professor will inform you of the books you need to purchase by your first day of class.

Textbooks are available at the NC State Bookstore on campus (919.515.3119). Books may also be available at Addam’s University Bookstore at 2109 Avent Ferry Road (919.832.9938), Pack Backers Bookstore at 2526 Hillsborough Street (919.832.9900), and through Internet sources.

New Student Survival Guide

Students who are new to NC State may want to read the New Student Survival Guide which includes information on additional orientation meetings for all NCSU students as well as tips on housing, the Raleigh area, and university resources.

International Students

In addition to the mandatory MBA orientation, international students are required to attend the Office of International Services (OIS) orientation in August 2010. More information, including an OIS orientation schedule and information about airport pickup and temporary housing, can be found on their website. International students should refer to the OIS website often for important information on necessary documentation and procedures for arriving and departing the USA. The MBA Office recommends that international students arrive in the Raleigh area several days before the MBA orientation so that issues of housing and transportation can be resolved prior to the start of orientation.

Please note that some full-time students will be required to get additional language and accent training after beginning the program. This training is provided by NC State University and is intended to improve communication skills and increase employability.

Housing

View this list of housing located along the Wolfline bus system. Though not exhaustive, this will be a good starting point for students seeking apartments close to campus.
