Graduate and undergraduate accounting programs move up to 20th place in annual ranking

Nov. 20, 2006 - The College of Management’s undergraduate and graduate programs in accounting both rose to 20th place in the Public Accounting Report’s annual ranking, published Oct. 30, 2006. This is the second year that the college’s programs were included in the rankings. In 2005, the Master of Accounting (MAC) Program was ranked 23rd, and the undergraduate program was ranked 24th.

The NC State College of Management’s undergraduate accounting program is the only North Carolina program on the top 25 list, and its MAC program shares a spot on the list with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

The annual ranking is based on the Public Accounting Report’s annual survey of accounting professors. The survey asks accounting professors, department heads and department chairs to name the undergraduate and graduate programs that offer degrees in accounting they felt most consistently turn out students capable of someday attaining partner status.

“We are very pleased with this growing recognition for our accounting programs,” said Ira R. Weiss, dean of the college. “It reflects the ongoing quality of our faculty and the programs they have developed for our students. We also recognize the valuable contribution that many firms make through internships, scholarships and other opportunities that they offer our students,” he said.

The college’s merit-based MAC fellowship program, for example, is made possible through a partnership between sponsoring companies and CPA firms and the college’s Department of Accounting. MAC Fellows receive financial support for education expenses and an offer of employment upon graduation.

The college’s current accounting department has been building on a long history of accounting and business education at NC State, a history that predates the establishment of the college in 1992. The college’s undergraduate program in accounting currently has 528 students, and 84 Master of Accounting students.

NC State’s College of Management also has a full-time and part-time MBA program, graduate economics program, and undergraduate programs in business management and economics.
