Nearly 700 students honored at College of Management's May 10 commencement ceremony

May 12, 2008 - The College of Management recognized 674 graduates at its spring commencement ceremony held Saturday, May 10, at NC State’s RBC Center [view photo album]. The ceremony included the announcement of special student award recipients and faculty recognition.

Two of the graduates received Doctor of Economics degrees: Otilia Boldea and Joo-Kyun Sung.

Also recognized were 22 recipients of Master of Economics degrees; 15, Bachelor of Arts in Economics; 15,  Bachelor of Science in Economics; 92, Master of Business Administration; 83, Master of Accounting; 105, Bachelor of Science in Accounting; and 340, Bachelor of Science in Business Management.

The following student award recipients were announced.

College of Management Board of Advisors’ Outstanding Student Award
Recipient: Lauren Ross Bucher

This award recognizes excellent students who also have demonstrated excellent citizenship through their personal ethics, leadership and service to the college, the university and the community.

Highest Ranking Senior Award

This award recognizes students who achieved the highest grade point average among students in their programs of study for all courses taken at NC State. Spring 2008 honorees are:

  • Meredith Sasser Hager, of Apex, NC, received a bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in marketing. Hager was inducted into Alpha Epsilon Delta, the pre-med honor society, and has interned with Dr. Gilbert Montoya, a periodontist in Cary, NC. She plans to continue working in that office and apply to dental school.
  • Lydia Faith Hartley of Durham, NC, received a bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in human resource management and minors in economics and accounting. She worked at Wachovia Bank and Dunn Physical Therapy in Cary, where she is assistant to the practice manager. She will continue at that office working in human resources administration.
  • Peyton William Holland of New Hill, NC, received a bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in marketing. He was inducted in Phi Eta Sigma honor society as a freshman and was a University Scholar. He is interning as marketing coordinator with Pentair Water and will enroll in the first class of the College of Management’s new Master in Global Innovation Management program. Holland also delivered the student commencement address at the college's graduation ceremony
  • Elizabeth Anne Lane of Raleigh, NC, received a bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in marketing. She interned with the Carolina Mudcats and studied abroad in the summer of 2007 in Aix-en-Provence, France. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society and accepted a position with CapStrap in Raleigh.
  • Constance Alyssa Owen of Burlington, NC, received two bachelor’s degrees, in business management and accounting, with concentrations in finance and financial analysis. She has been inductedin to Veta Gamma Sigma honor society and is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity through which she contributed over 200 service hours. She completed an internship with RH Donnelly and is interning this summer with Johnson Lambert, and enter the College of Management’s Master of Accounting program this fall.
  • Bekgah Luanne Reed of New Bern, NC, received a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a concentration in financial analysis. She has been inducted into both Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honor society for which she served as vice president. She completed an internship with the tax firm Thomas Judy & Tucker and will intern with Dixon Hughes this summer, and is entering the college’s Master of Accounting program this fall.
  • Jeremy Alexander Snipes of Southern Pines, NC, received a bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in finance. He is a memer of Gamma Beta Phi, an honorary service society, and will begin his career as a financial services officer with the State Employees Credit Union.
  • John Leslie Taylor of Raleigh, NC, received a bachelor’s degree in accounting and is completed a second major in economics this summer. He has been inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, and will start a Master of Accounting degree program at the University of Texas at Austin in the fall.
  • Tibor Vegh of Raleigh, NC, received a bachelor’s degree in economics. A university scholar athlete, he came to the United States from Hungary as an international student and to train in track and field. He will enter a master’s degree program in resource economics and forestry at Northern Arizona Uniersity in Flagstaff this fall.

Economics Graduate Program’s Outstanding Master’s Graduate
Recipient: Kay Naumova

Originally from Moscow, Russia, Naumova complemented her economics studies with finance and consulting courses from the college’s Master of Business Administration program. In addition to her coursework, Naumova served as a student volunteer and an Economics Graduate Program representative at the college’s Board of Advisors meeting. She plans to return to Moscow to work for Accenture.

Master of Business Administration Outstanding Student Awards
Recipients: Monica Verma, full-time MBA Program; James C. Talley IV, Part-time MBA Program.

Verma received a bachelor of engineering with honors from Bangalore University, India, and a master’s in computer science, magna cum laude, from Appalachian State University. She has worked for Wipro Technologies-Nortel Networks as a software systems engineer and corporate trainer and as a computer consultant at Appalachian State University, In the MBA program, she was coordinator of communications for the MBA Student Association and vice president for events and public relations for the National Association of Women MBAs chapter at the college’s Jenkins Graduate School of Management.

Talley earned his bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Tennessee and has worked for CTI Logistx/TNT Logistics, Condumex Inc., and Ultimate Staffing, in logistics and operations positions. He currently is the North America Transportation Manager at Kuehne + Nagle Lead Logistics. Talley had graduated from the MBA program in December 2007.

Master of Accounting Outstanding Student Award
Recipient: Meredith Carson Peele

As an undergraduate student in the college’s Bachelor of Accounting program, Peele was on the dean’s list each semester and continued her academic excellence in the graduate program. She received the prestigious NC State Collier Scholarship and was president of the MAC student organization. Peele participated in MAC prospective student information sessions and at recognition socials for accounting courses. She has accepted a position with Ernst & Young in Woodland Hills, Calif.
